SPRING

- DAVID HUGHES

If H.P. Lovecraft had written Before Sunrise, the result might look a lot like Spring, Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson’s 2014 follow-up to their micro-budget mind-bender Resolution. Following the death of his mother, Evan (Lou Taylor Pucci) impulsively flies to Italy, where he meets and falls in love with the mysterious and gorgeous Louise (The Walking Dead’s Nadia Hilker). But what begins as a whirlwind holiday romance soon transforms into something altogether stranger (as, indeed, does she) as Evan uncovers a dark and terrifying secret about his new love. The dialogue is natural, the performances flawless, the metaphor profound, and if there were any justice, there would be a fan convention every spring in Bari, Apulia, where Moorhead and Benson’s unconventional yet swooningly romantic love story was filmed. As it is, we’ll have to make do with 101’s extras-packed Blu-ray.
