WHAT IS DEMON SLAYER: INFINITY TRAIN?
Everything you need to know about the record-breaking Japanese anime film
WHAT’S THE PLOT?
It’s about a young man who slays man-eating demons! Set in early 1900s Japan, Demon Slayer: Infinity Train sees Tanjiro Kamado join the demon slayers after his family is killed and his sister Nezuko is turned into a demon herself.
WHAT IS IT BASED ON?
The film is a direct sequel to a hugely popular anime TV show, itself adapted from the 2016 manga written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotouge.
WHAT RECORDS DID IT BREAK?
It outgrossed one of the most popular Japanese films ever made, Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name, and has now toppled the two-decade record held by Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away to become Japan’s biggest box-office hit.
HOW DO THE PREVIOUS RECORD-HOLDERS FEEL?
On Twitter, Shinkai commented, “What, already?!” before adding that it “speaks to the health of the entertainment sector.” When approached for comment, Miyazaki simply stated: “That’s got nothing to do with me.”
WHY IS IT SO POPULAR?
Most likely it’s due to its loveable protagonist, some goofy sidekicks, and its supremely slick animation, courtesy of studio Ufotable.
HOW MANY DEMONS ARE SLAIN?
A lot. But the show is at its most exciting when Tanjiro comes up against seemingly unbeatable foes, and better still when Gotouge’s writing shows sympathy toward their tragic stories.
