Diablo Cody’s debut screenplay was on the first Black List in 2005. Cody went on to win a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for it in 2008.
THE SOCIAL NETWORK
Aaron Sorkin’s behind-the-scenes Facebook drama scored the second-most mentions on the 2009 Black List; it went on to earn eight Oscar nominations, winning three — including Best Adapted Screenplay for Sorkin.
ARRIVAL
Then-titled ‘Story Of Your Life’, Eric Heisserer’s adaptation of the short story by Ted Chiang had 35 mentions on the 2012 Black List. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the 2016 film was a critical and commercial hit, placed at number two on Empire’s end-of-year list.
SPOTLIGHT
Tom Mccarthy and Josh Singer’s script, detailing an investigative journalist team’s exposé of child sex abuse by Catholic priests, was on the 2013 Black List. It went on to win Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay Oscars.
JOJO RABBIT
Taika Waititi’s comedy-drama about a German boy in Nazi Germany had 12 mentions on the 2012 Black List; the eventual film won Waititi both an Academy Award and BAFTA for Best Adapted Screenplay.
