JAMES CAMERON: I don’t think I had any confidence whatsoever. We never did any test screenings. The studio hadn’t even really seen it, until we slipped back from England with it all ready to go. They had already booked The Fly to come out a week later. I said to Barry Diller, “What are you guys doing? You don’t put a horror movie after a horror movie.” Fox stepped on their own toes with that. So I didn’t see any crowd reaction to that film until the premiere.

So here I am, at the big theatre in Westwood, the Avco Cinema, I think. It’s 1,000 of my closest friends from Hollywood, all the agents and producers and midlevel executives, everybody just sharpening their knives. And on that line, the whole place just lost their shit. The Fox executives were stunned, because they realised they had something, but had mismanaged it.
