CULT HERO OF THE MONTH

- CHARLIE STEEDS

Writer-director Charlie Steeds turns out scrappy, spiky British horror films, often with old-school man-in-a-suit monsters and lashings of splat. His stock company of players comes across as a blend of the Carry On crew and John Waters’ Pink Flamingos gang: David Lenik (mild-mannered and doomed), Emma Spurgin Hussey (Evil Hattie Jacques), Jessica Alonso (wild-eyed and accented), Swainley Whipps Eden-entwistle (portly minion) and Barrington De La Roche (one of the Most Actorly names ever). Steeds has made nine films since 2016, including far-future horror Deadman Apocalypse, the Lovecraftian The Barge People, creature feature Winterskin and nasty-business-inthe-barn horrors Escape From Cannibal Farm and Death Ranch, plus obligatory entries in major monster sub-genres, the modish faux-american Vampire Virus and traditionally hairy A Werewolf In England.
