Unearthing Wandavision’s biggest secrets
Digging into the hidden references, clues and comic-book nods packed into Marvel’s hit TV show
FROM ONE CAPTAIN TO ANOTHER
In episode four, when Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) returns after ‘the blip’, the voice of Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers can be heard. Monica appeared, as a child, in Captain Marvel.
PHOTON BLAST FROM THE PAST
A photo of Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), Monica’s mother, is seen in a plaque at S.W.O.R.D. HQ, with her call sign ‘Photon’. In the comics, Monica becomes a superhero known as Photon.
THE HOUSE WINE
The wine served in episode one, Maison du Mépris, translates to “House of Mockery”, or House of M — the 2005 comic storyline which saw Wanda rewrite the Marvel Universe.
HEX APPEAL
Agent Woo’s whiteboard mentions hexagons — referring to Wanda’s hex-powers, as they’re known in the comics.
MOTHER’S MILK
A sign for Bova Milk is in the opening credits of episode two. Bova Ayrshire is an evolved ‘cow-woman’ — no, really — created by the rogue scientist the High Evolutionary in Marvel comics, and was Wanda and Pietro’s caretaker.
PROPOSE A TOAST
In episode one, the Toastmate 2000’s timer makes the same sound as Iron Man’s weapon loading when it goes off. ‘Toaster’ has also been used in Marvel comics as an insulting nickname for Vision.
SOAP OPERA
Hydra Soak soap, seen in the commercial in episode three, was indirectly referenced by Phil Coulson as HYDRA’S mind-controlling soap in a Season four episode of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D..
THE BROTHER GRIM
The helmet of Marvel Comics villain Grim Reaper can be seen under the floorboards of Wanda and Vision’s house in episode two. The character is Vision’s “brother” by way of the synthezoid sharing the brain patterns of Reaper’s actual sibling, Simon Williams, aka, Wonder Man.
STRUCK OUT
The Strucker watch commercial in episode two is a reference to Baron Strucker, the HYRDRA leader who unlocked Wanda and Pietro’s powers with Loki’s sceptre in the MCU.
STRIKE A POSE
Vision and Wanda’s back-to-back pose in episode three is a tribute to 1985 comic The Vision And The Scarlet Witch Vol. 2 No. 1.
TWIN TROUBLE
In the comics, Wanda and Vision’s twins, Billy and Tommy, go on to become Young Avengers Wiccan and Speed.
