Stepping out from under her giant wig, Australian musician Sia delivers a chaotic but hokey directorial debut. The musical drama stars Kate Hudson as an aimless former addict summoned home to care for her autistic half-sister Music (Sia’s teenage muse Maddie Ziegler, who, to the film’s disadvantage, is not on the autism spectrum). The film splits its time between misjudged drama and a series of pop music vignettes. With their retina-stinging palettes and pantomime choreography, Music’s daydreams are spectacular but offer nothing new to those who know Sia’s music videos. Back in the real world, the story about a mismatched family piecing their lives together is too saccharine and slight to make Music memorable.
