CAST Gerard Butler, Morena Bacarin, David Denman
The prospect of a Gerry Butler movie in which a comet destroys the world might have you salivating for a ludicrous affair in which our gruff hero headbutts a giant space rock, but Greenland is a very different proposition — and, perhaps surprisingly, a much better one. It centres on Butler’s structural engineer, as he finds himself (and his estranged wife and diabetic son — hello, foreshadowing!) selected for survival in a government bunker. But getting there isn’t going to be a cinch. What could have been a bombastic load of boulders is, instead, a refreshingly serious and compelling affair, with director Ric Roman Waugh (who directed Butler in Angel Has Fallen) grounding events nicely. It’s Butler’s best star vehicle in years.
