Legend of the deep A retro diving watch from the days of Jacques Cousteau

-

International watchmakers unveiled all their latest creations at April’s Baselworld watch fair, from which we discerned the timepiece trends that’ll soon be hitting the jewellers. Blue is the colour for 2017, and, if you’re a fan of cushion-shaped dials you’re bang in luck. Another prevalent theme is the vintage reissue: Tag Heuer has done it with its Autavia; Omega with its Railmaster, and Oris with the Big Crown 1917. One standout reimagining is Longines Legend Diver, first produced in 1960. The 2017 edition, on a steel Milanese strap, is a chic new take on the form. Though you’d probably think hard before taking it into the sea (you’d need the rubber strap iteration for that), it’s built to be submerged to 300m. Its automatic movement, with a 36-hour power reserve, nestles snugly behind a black lacquered dial fitted with a rotating disk, allowing you to monitor remaining dive time.
