Black leather three-inch traditional handstitched attaché, £2,975, by Pickett

Less manbag than bag man: carrying this, I felt like an undercover narc making a drugs buy. (I looked like an accountant from Carshalton, but that’s not the bag’s fault.) I fully expected to find a pair of handcuffs inside, so I could attach my wrist to it. Either that or a couple of kilos of primo, uncut cocaine. (Sadly, it was as empty as an addict’s bank account.) Handmade in England, its bridle hide leather concealing a cedar wood shell, it is indisputably a beautiful thing, elegant as a vintage Jag and manly as a handlebar moustache. Bit much for this strap-hanger, though.
