One of Britain’s leading writers of both fiction and journalism, Lanchester is the author of five novels, including The Debt to Pleasure, Mr Phillips, Fragrant

Harbour, Capital — which was made into a threepart BBC drama in 2015 — and, most recently, his keenly received English dystopia, The Wall.

A contributo­r to The New Yorker, The Guardian and The London Review of Books, as well as Esquire, Lanchester has written extensivel­y on the financial crisis of 2007 and beyond, in books including Whoops! Why Everyone Owes Everyone and No One Can Pay. In this issue, he publishes a new short story, “The Alcove”.
