Soho House opens in Mumbai

- By Rachel Fellows

If they carry on like this, there will be no corner of any foreign field that isn’t forever Soho. At the end of last year, Soho House’s groovy empirebuilding invasion moved on to a new continent, with its first members’ club and hotel in Asia.

Soho House Mumbai is located in an imposing 10-storey townhouse overlooking trendy Juhu Beach. Its facilities will not be unfamiliar to members of Nick Jones’ good-times-all-thetime behemoth’s many other properties, from Amsterdam to Chicago, Berlin to Miami Beach, Istanbul to Malibu, Barcelona to Brooklyn, and many points in between, each cleverly tweaked to reflect the character and aesthetic of its host city, while still retaining the essence of the original Soho House, which opened in London in 1995. They’re stylish but comfortable, smart but not stuffy, exclusive but not elitist, and peopled by members of the creative classes: film-makers, broadcasters, designers, advertising bods, music biz movers and shakers. And yes, they even let in magazine journalists from time to time.

Soho House Mumbai boasts a rooftop pool, with a bar and restaurant overlooking the city and the Arabian Sea. The House Kitchen serves Soho House classics including flat iron chicken and mac and cheese, plus Indian specialities including Keralan fish curry and Awadhi mutton biryani. There is a gym, with indoor and outdoor spaces, a 32-seat screening room with mohair seats, a branch of Soho House’s upmarket Italian chain Cecconi’s, serving cicchetti, pizzas and pasta, and there are 38 rooms, including two Playrooms with sea-facing balconies, four-poster beds, living areas and dining tables with space for six. Over 200 works of Asian art decorate the building, offsetting the Rajasthani fabrics and Indian antiques adorning the rest of the club.

It’s the hottest new spot in all of Asia. Until, that is, they open the doors to Soho House Hong Kong, in Sai Ying Pun, which should be happening right about… now!
