A new furniture brand aims to end flat-pack misery, quick-style

- By Johnny Davis

Seventy-five per cent of us are happy to pay someone else to do it. Forty-four per cent say we’d never attempt it ourselves. And 14 per cent of under-40s still rely on dad being handy with an Allen key, according to a recent survey. We talk of flat-pack furniture assembly, that unique emotional torture that’s been with us ever since that afternoon in 1950s Sweden when an Ikea employee sawed the legs off a table so he could fit it into his car boot, and told the boss he’d just had a bright idea.

Now, London designer Fuzl Studio has created a range of stylish, self-assembly furniture without the need for bamboozling fold-out instructions and baggies of slightly different length screws. The Originals range includes a chair, stool, bench and three tables made from birchplywood panels that clip together with heavy-duty metal fasteners.

The “Qik clips” are normally used in shipping, to secure plywood crates as they get transported around the world. Here, they are used for rapid assembly and disassembly. They provide versatility, too: a piece known as Rotable can be flipped so it turns from a coffee table into a desk. The record for assembling an Originals range chair? Fifty-five seconds.

“The idea of short-term, disposable furniture is really quite troubling,” says Fuzl Studio founder Oliver Theobald. “Our clips will keep your furniture strong for years to come. No tools, no glue and no tightening needed… ever.”
