Here at Wilks & Com­pany Wine Mer­chants we love noth­ing more than dis­cov­er­ing and bring­ing to our cus­tomers wines to de­light and even sur­prise. There is a cer­tain un­de­ni­able vin­di­ca­tion about fol­low­ing your gut and un­cov­er­ing some “hid­den gems”. Over the years we have been for­tu­nate in be­ing able to pur­sue wines with sub­tle dif­fer­ences from the hum­drum norm, with trust earned from many cus­tomers, and to this day are still find­ing charm­ing twists on even mod­ern clas­sics. For some re­cent ex­am­ples, this year we have been very proud to im­port a new Picpoul Rosé from Do­maine Grangette – along­side their sig­na­ture Picpoul Blanc. Picpoul, like Pinot Gri­gio, is tra­di­tion­ally dif­fi­cult to har­vest sig­nif­i­cant char­ac­ter from but Grangette have tri­umphed against the odds with this del­i­cate, classy Rosé with red fruit.The cute hen on the bot­tle mim­ick­ing the wine’s ti­tle “Pi­coti Pi­cota” is sure to bring a smile.

Another new de­vel­op­ment for us this year, from one of our largest sup­pli­ers still push­ing for­ward, is the Grand Viog­nier 1612 from Cel­lier des Chartreux. Pre­sented in an im­pres­sive, deep-belled bot­tle, this gor­geous Grand Viog­nier has the typ­i­cal Ly­chee notes along with stone fruit and a fab­u­lous nose. Chartreux have also re­leased a cheek­ily named Mer­lot-Syrah blend ti­tled Chama­su­tra. The rich dark red fruit flavours and deep spices are sure to tickle many a fancy.

Find­ing a sin­gle new, ex­cel­lent wine is one thing, but when you can see qual­ity across the board within one win­ery it makes our hearts sing.We are very proud to present wines from both Tra­di­tion and Sig­na­ture ranges of Do­maine Haut Marin. Un­der su­per­vi­sion of Wine­mak­ers and Own­ers Jegerlehner & Prataviera, these Gas­cony wines are ex­pertly blended and we have a great va­ri­ety. Per­sonal rec­om­men­da­tions from this grower are the “Fos­siles” blend of Colom­bard, Gros-Manseng and Sauvi­gnon Blanc grapes, and the Rosé “Gour­mand” blend from Caber­net Sauvi­gnon, Mer­lot, Syrah, Tan­nat and Egiodola va­ri­eties.

The last of our new ar­rivals, and per­haps the ex­am­ple we’re most proud of, is a new Sancerre range we have from Do­maine Fleuriet. These de­light­ful Or­ganic wines have top-qual­ity clas­sic flavours, and the cen­tre­piece “Tra­di­tion” Blanc Sancerre is nigh un­beat­able for the money.

We couldn’t leave you with­out a Fes­tive Cham­pagne rec­om­men­da­tion and our Ar­tisi­nal grow­ers Cham­pagne Colin (Pro­nounced Coe-Lan) are just the ticket. Al­ways a cut above, their Blanc de Blancs Pre­mier Cru “Par­al­lele” is sublime with honey and brioche flavours.As an Ex­tra Brut it has vir­tu­ally no Dosage – some call this “Skinny Cham­pagne”, we call it “De­li­cious”!
