Black­wells have been rear­ing Christ­mas poul­try since 1983, we started with just 50 tur­keys, 13 geese and 100 chick­ens our de­mand has quickly grown and this year we have 5500 tur­keys, 2000 geese and 500 large chick­ens reared es­pe­cially for the Thanks­giv­ing and Christ­mas mar­ket. Each bird is fed on a whole wheat grain-based diet that also utilises naked oats with­out the use of hor­mones, growth pro­mot­ers or bis­cuit waste.

All our birds are free range bronze tur­keys which means they are free to roam in large grass pad­docks all day. They are reared to ma­tu­rity, skill­fully hand fin­ished and ‘game hung’ for 10-14 days which is part of our golden turkey as­so­ci­a­tion re­quire­ments which gives us a far su­pe­rior tast­ing bird com­pared to most avail­able. Once the birds ar­rive on the farm they are never crated for trans­port as they are pre­pared on site creat­ing lit­tle stress as pos­si­ble.

We can pro­vide you with every­thing from a whole bronze free range turkey to feed the whole fam­ily to a bone­less breast to serve a smaller party.

Our free range geese are also bought in to the farm as day old goslings in mid April then the sec­ond batch a month late, be­cause the geese are bought in to the farm at this time it means they get the ben­e­fit of the spring grass which is full of nu­tri­tion then they move on to our home grown wheat. Our geese come beau­ti­fully boxed with a cook­ing leaflet and pop up timer to mak­ing cook­ing much less has­sle.

Our Christ­mas tast­ing day is on the 17th and 18th Novem­ber this year for any­one that would like to come and try our pro­duce be­fore plac­ing an or­der!

If you’re look­ing for some­thing spe­cial for the Christ­mas ta­ble we also do a su­perb three bird roast which com­pro­mises of a goose, a chicken and a pheas­ant all placed within each other and stuffed with our own sage and apri­cot stuff­ing. The roast is boned for ease of carv­ing and makes a lovely dish eaten hot or cold.

This year we cel­e­brated our 10th an­niver­sary in the farm shop. We are com­mit­ted to sup­port­ing lo­cal sup­pli­ers and over 90% of the pro­duce we mar­ket is sourced from within a 20-mile ra­dius of the farm. We source our meat from lo­cal farm­ers known and trusted by our­selves for their good hus­bandry skills and rare breed an­i­mals.

We don’t just sup­ply poul­try for Christ­mas, we can also sup­ply you with var­i­ous cuts of meat from the butch­ery counter. The most pop­u­lar prod­ucts we sell at Christ­mas grow­ing year on year are our lo­cal rare breed ribs of beef which are hung for a min­i­mum of 21 days to en­hance flavour, tra­di­tional hams and gam­mons which are cut from our own rare breed pork and cured for us and our wide se­lec­tion of sausages; whether you want chipo­latas, tra­di­tional sausages or pigs in blan­kets these are all hand made by our butch­ers on site.

In ad­di­tion to all our meat prod­ucts we also of­fer all the lovely treats our kitchen team make savoury and sweet; pigs in blan­kets, sausage meat and four dif­fer­ent flavours of pork stuff­ings; sage & onion, white wine & apri­cot, port & cran­berry and ap­ple & ch­est­nut these are al­ways a favourite with our cus­tomers! If you’re look­ing for some­thing sweet we make our own Christ­mas cake and Christ­mas pud­dings which come in three dif­fer­ent sizes.
