IMAGINE waking up to invigorating fresh air, with beautiful views for as far as you can see. The North-east of Scotland has a plethora of locations by the sea, offering a great quality of family life. If you have a coastal location in mind, you might like to consider some of these areas: South of Aberdeen is the Mearns – comprising a variety of popular locations including St Cyrus, with its beautiful nature reserve, and the quaint fishing villages of Johnshaven and Gourdon. Slightly bigger are Inverbervie and Laurencekirk, and all within reasonable commuting distance of Aberdeen. Stonehaven is a perpetually popular location, both for families looking to settle and for tourists. It’s a thriving fishing and market town, a holiday haven with beautiful coastal views, and fine pubs and restaurants. Beyond Aberdeen is Buchan – a region of the North-east with its own distinct identity, where the North Sea meets the Moray Firth. Here you will find Fraserburgh, a fishing port with award-winning sandy beaches, and nearby Peterhead with its two harbours and a long history of life linked to the sea. Affectionately referred to as the Blue Toon – Peterhead is a bustling town with lots to offer a family. And it boasts its own football team for those who enjoy supporting a local side. And if you prefer somewhere quieter and out of town, there are lots of villages nearby. Near Fraserburgh you will find the villages of Cairnbulg and New Pitsligo for example, while close to Peterhead is Stuartfield, Cruden Bay, Old Deer, St Fergus, Longside and Fetterangus. On a bigger scale is the town of Mintlaw, which lies between the two. Travelling further north again will bring you to one of the most interesting and beautiful parts of the North-east. Banff Bay is beautiful and renowned for its surfing waves and golden sands, while the town has medieval origins and a delightful harbour. Its neighbouring town, Macduff, is also a gem and is noted for its fish houses where you can choose from the day’s catch.

GREAT PLACES: Boddam lighthouse and, inset, Stonehaven harbour and cyclists enjoying the town’s beach.
