Pair had to make up minds on spot
Flat buy decision was made in minutes.
“Closing date in two hours”
MOST people have days or weeks to decide on whether to buy a property. So it came as a shock to Gordon Morrison and Gillian Bowman to learn they had just moments to make up their minds when they went to view 80 Blenheim Place. When the pair arrived at the West End apartment, the owner told them it was going to a closing date in two hours. “We were incredibly lucky to get this apartment when we did,” said 55-year-old Gordon, of Maryculter. The former electrician said: “Gillian and I always know before we’re on the garden path if the property is right for us and this one was no different.” And, setting their hearts on owning the three-bedroom home, the couple rushed to their car to phone in an offer. An anxious hour later they were told their bid had been successful. Gordon and Gillian, a 46-year-old hairdressing studio owner, were living in Riverside Terrace six years ago with their sons, twins Connor and Ryan, now 20, and Danny, now 16. Gordon said: “We had spent three years transforming the home on Riverside Terrace and we'd both got a taste for renovation. That’s what led us to this new challenge.” The couple, who have been together for 25 years, spotted the potential of the period flat and loved that there was a lot of work to be done. As the previous owner was an older woman, the decor was extremely dated. “When we went to view it, I struggled to find a kitchen and then realised that it was simply a two-ring stove with a grill underneath that looked like it could be used for camping. “The decor looked like a time warp with no central heating and old carpets and linoleum,“ said Gordon. However, it quickly became clear that there was a more serious problem to address. Gordon said: “ The whole family was staying in a hotel
as I planned to put in central heating and then move in. “However we found out one of the main water pipes was burst. The plumber suggested we get the main pipe fixed, the central heating, the bathroom and the kitchen done in one go. “We ended up spending an expensive month in the hotel.” And it took them another year getting the property to look the way they wanted and feel like home – in period style, with a bold, modern twist. Gordon said: “Gillian’s got a real artistic flair and she’s added some fantastic details.” The garden was also in need
“It looked like a time warp”
of a lot of hard work and it took two lorry loads to get rid of all the weeds, growth and debris. “Because it’s completely sheltered we’ve now got a lovely decked area,” Gordon said. With one of the boys already flown the nest and another set to do so, the couple have decided it’s time to downsize. “We don’t need all the space any more so we’re on the look-out for another property. We’re not really sure where, though.”
