Cast give play heart and soul

Evening Express (City Final) - The Guide - - WHAT'S ON -

IT TAKES courage and determination to take on the huge challenge of a Shakespearean tragedy. And the young stars of Acorn Theatre showed they had it in spades. Played out in a 1950s-style setting, complete with dance music, zoot suits and party dresses, the play stays true to the original script. Alex Bayman’s intense portrayal of Juliet was truly heart-wrenching, as the star-crossed lovers head towards inevitable doom. Her emotional scenes were nicely counterpointed by Kirsty Rennie’s Nurse. Russell Dudley and Brad Morrison really impressed as the hot-blooded Mercutio and Friar Lawrence. But when it comes to courage, the award surely goes to Liam West, who stepped into the role of Romeo literally days before curtain up, and did a sterling job. The play runs tonight and tomorrow.
