TWENTY driv­ers have been given on-the-spot fines for poor driv­ing. Po­lice tar­geted mo­torists tak­ing short­cuts on “rat runs” dur­ing rush hour and stopped dozens of driv­ers. Of those, six re­ceived warn­ings, 20 were handed fixed-penalty no­tices and more were given po­lice ad­vice about re­spon­si­ble driv­ing. The road safety op­er­a­tion took place on Til­ly­drone streets such as Di­a­mond Bridge, Gor­don’s Mills Road, Don­side Vil­lage, Win­gate Road and Por­tal Cres­cent last week be­tween 7am and 9am and again be­tween 4pm and 6pm. Sergeant Richard Roach, from Til­ly­drone com­mu­nity polic­ing team, said: “Road safety is an im­por­tant is­sue. “Through our divi­sional ini­tia­tive un­der Op­er­a­tion Cedar, we con­tinue to work to­wards chal­leng­ing driv­ing be­hav­iour and ed­u­cat­ing mo­torists about driv­ing safely in or­der to re­duce fa­tal­i­ties and se­ri­ous in­juries on our roads. “All road users have their part to play and we will con­tinue with our road safety op­er­a­tions over the com­ing months to keep peo­ple safe.”
