A MAN is to appear in court accused of drinkdriving and crashing into a north-east war memorial. The 29-year-old is alleged to have been behind the wheel of a car on the A98 Banff-to-portsoy road when it collided with a war memorial in Boyndie. The memorial is on a grass verge between the road and a layby and its granite pillar could be seen yesterday knocked out of its foundations. It pays tribute to those who gave their lives while serving in RAF Banff Wing during the Second World War. The alleged incident came a day after Police Scotland launched a crackdown on drink-driving in the run up to the festive period. A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “We launched the national initiative on Saturday, which will run until January 2 and will see offficers conduct high-visibility patrols. “With this year’s campaign days old, two drivers have been charged with drink-drive offences.” She added the man is due to appear at Elgin Sheriff Court at a later date – as is a 32-year-old woman who has also been charged with drink-driving in an alleged incident that is unrelated. During last year’s crackdown, police took action against 59 drivers who were charged with drink or drug driving offences. Road Policing Inspector Neil Morrison, inset, said: “Drink-driving or driving under the influence of drugs, prescribed or otherwise, is not acceptable at any time of the year and the festive period is no exception. “It is a time of celebration and an opportunity to socialise. “Of course I expect people to go out and enjoy themselves but I would also expect everyone to do this safely. “We have a zero-tolerance approach to drink-driving. “If you are stopped driving while over the limit, you will face disqualification, fines and also run the risk of having your vehicle seized.”
