A BID to ban smoking in bedrooms of a homeless hostel has been approved. A motion was raised by Councillor Aileen Malone, that residents would be allowed to smoke in a number of bedrooms at the Bon Accord Street hostel. However, an amendment was made by Cllr Richard Robertson – a former fire fighter of 30 years – at the full council meeting to stop the motion. And the amendment won by two votes. Cllr Robertson, pictured, said: “I feel it is my moral duty to express my concern over the poor judgement in even making such a proposal of allowing smoking in bedrooms of the hostel. It was announced last week the number of fire deaths in the Northeast of Scotland have doubled in the last year in contrast to the downwards national trend.” He said he had spoken to the chief fire officer for Grampian Fire and Rescue Service David Dalziel who told him smoking should not be allowed in bedrooms. Cllr Malone said there had been a high volume of complaints from residents near the hostel. “We’re trying to make the area nicer for the other residents in the area,” she said. “Also, at the moment, some of the hostel residents are taking out smoke detectors and smoking in their rooms anyway.”
