Ex-addict threatened to kill men
Man, 31, locked up
A FORMER heroin addict was jailed for eight years after he threatened to kill two ex-workmates.
Peterhead resident Joseph Russell was found guilty of threatening to kill two colleagues at the Autoshine valet firm on Balmoor Terrace, Peterhead.
He was also found guilty of being in possession of a pistol and being concerned in the supply of amphetamine.
Appearing at the High Court in Edinburgh for sentencing, Judge Lord Pentland told the 31-year-old he regarded his conviction for possessing a pistol “as very troubling in view of your criminal propensities”.
The court heard Russell, pictured, a former car valet, had 25 previous convictions.
Lord Pentland added: “Parliament has made it clear such offences must be regarded as particularly serious ones.
“My clear view is that you must now serve a substantial term of imprisonment as a punishment and to deter others.”
Describing Russell as owning “an unimpressive criminal record” Lord Pentland listed convictions for dishone s ty , firearms offences and drug supply.
His defence advocate George Mathers said: “It has to be accepted that the combination of drugs, threats, guns and prohibited ammunition make this a matter of the utmost seriousness.”
But Mr Mathers added that the incident involving the threats had been “a one off”.
He said Russell’s previous convictions dated back to when he was aged 16 and earlier.
He was introduced to heroin at the age of 14, which accounted for his offending as he tried to fund his habit, but he had done well when placed on a court drug treatment and testing order, Mr Mathers said.
Russell, of 10 Park Lane, Peterhead, was earlier found guilty at the High Court in Aberdeen of illegally possessing the pistol and pepper gas cartridges in Peterhead last year.
He was also convicted of threatening to kill Jeugenji Samoroscenko and Przemyslaw Kolatkiewicz, their partners and members of their families at the premises of Autoshine at Balmoor Terrace, Peterhead, on May 24 last year.
Lord Pentl a n d s e ntenced Russell to eight years in prison.
