US rules on patenting of genes

Evening Express (Extra Edition) - - NEWS -

A US federal court has said human genes can be patented.

The move could have had big implications for biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.

The ruling said genes can be patented because isolated DNA has a different chemical structure from DNA within the body.

The US Patent and Trademark Office has been awarding patents on genes for almost 30 years.
