Pro­ject’s award for ex­cel­lence

A RAFT-BUILD­ING pro­ject has won an award for bring­ing to­gether Banff teenagers and peo­ple with learn­ing dis­abil­i­ties.

The group spent 14 weeks designing and build­ing four en­tries for the Gar­i­och Lions Raft Race in June and won a bronze Cosla award for ex­cel­lence.

Banff Day Ser­vices man­ager Mark McDer­mott said he was proud ev­ery­one had worked hard.

He said: “Both younger peo­ple and those with dis­abil­i­ties de­vel­oped mu­tual re­spect and un­der­stand­ing that demon­strated they suf­fer from very sim­i­lar prob­lems and bar­ri­ers within their com­mu­nity.”

The group com­pleted swim­ming lessons in Banff Swim­ming Pool and a day of rock climb­ing and ab­seil­ing to pro­mote team­work. The teams also raised £1,600 with a char­ity car wash.
