My partner Hannah and I moved into this Victorian property in 2012 and have spent a year renovating it. I really liked the idea of being able to do it up in a very modern way, with an atrium and 6m-high glazed sliding doors that open on to the patio. In the summer it’s lovely to take the main dining table outside. It’s from Terence Conran’s Benchmark label and is a handmade natural oak table you can grow old with because it’s untreated, so over time it will warp and crack and build character. As it’s a ten-seater, it’s brilliant for entertaining and if someone spills wine on it, you don’t panic — you just wake up in the morning and sand it down.

I recently saw Terence Conran rooting around in the boxes of antiques at Les Puces flea market in Paris — it’s where I picked up this original Eames chair , which dates back to 1957 and was sold by the Herman Miller furniture company. Vitra makes the modern equivalent, but I love the washed-out yellow colour and the fact that it is still in such brilliant condition 56 years on.

I love Japan — I travel there twice a year because it’s one of the biggest markets for my company Joseph Joseph. The lampshade is a traditional Japanese Akari one with a

diameter of 1.6m — it’s the largest they do and it brings such warmth to the space. What makes it so special is that it is entirely handmade and the attention to detail is beautiful. At night it glows like the sun and it’s something I cherish in the winter. The Bialetti coffee pot is a timeless classic. It’s the first thing I fire up on a Sunday morning and it fills the house with that wonderful aroma. The sliding glass doors are framed by Victorian glazed bricks by Ibstock. I was inspired by an old public loo in Covent Garden where the bricks were over 100 years old yet had weathered so well. I like that they have such history. ( josephjoseph.com)
