NICOLE SCHERZINGER

- Interview by Lucy Hunter Johnston

I don’t wear anything when I sleep. I hope that doesn’t creep anyone out. I find clothes are restricting, so when I wake up they are usually on the floor. I’m still buzzing off the dress that I wore in The X Factor final. Julien Macdonald knows I love rose gold, so he created this dress of tiny metallic confetti on a sheer mesh skin. I designed the halterneck because I am really inspired by necks; I think shoulders are very sexy on a woman. When we started Pussycat Dolls the costumes were very cabaret inspired. Lots of lingerie. I love Madonna’s androgynous look: you can keep things sexy and not have to show as much skin. Growing up I had hair like a horse’s mane. My dad would cut it with the kitchen scissors. My mum used to crimp it and put in a hardcore side ponytail with a huge bow, which was my signature look. During the 1980s I tried to create feathered bangs, but that didn’t work. My mum was so fashionable. She wore a lot of jumpsuits, which I used to borrow, and a lot of ‘tube’ outfits. But the shoulder pads were key.

When I’m at home it’s all about the onesie. I have a penguin one and a teddy bear one

I’ve always loved fashion because I’ve always loved music. Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Paula Abdul… They have all inspired me. I admire Gwen Stefani; she started the whole street look. The first designer piece I bought was a silver Dior clutch, 13 years ago. I tried to buy one on eBay, but it was fake. So I saved up and got the real one. Last Halloween I dressed as Catwoman. I was in a feline mood. I felt really yummy, but also ‘don’t mess with me’. My favourite fancy dress outfit ever was when my mum dressed me up as Carmen Miranda; you just put a big bowl of fake fruit on your head. My most embarrassing moment was backstage at the Stand Up 2 Cancer live event. I was about to go on when they told me I was meant to wear a customised charity T-shirt, which I hadn’t done. Miley Cyrus ran over and lent me hers. Next time I saw her, she said, ‘Do you remember when me and my mum had to dress you?!’ and I was like, ‘I will never forget it!’ I’m Hawaiian. I want to be buried in surf shorts and a bikini. The Nicole x Missguided collection launches on 11 March at missguided.co.uk. Prices from £15
