JODIE KIDD

Model, racing driver and presenter, 35

- Interview by Samuel Fishwick

I once wore a glow-in-the-dark all-in-one suit to a Chanel fitting in the 1990s and Karl Lagerfeld loved it. As a result he did my hair in blonde dreadlocks for a campaign and put a bit of neon in the next collection. I like to dress up for driving — everything from an Yves Saint Laurent trouser suit to Chloé and Alice Temperley. But when I’m on the track I embrace old racing attire and wear overalls, goggles and a leather cap. Classic cars are so glamorous. They’re the ultimate accessory. Chanel should do a classic mechanic overalls look. I’d definitely wear it. I’m a sucker for a man in uniform. My husband [David Blakely] left the Special Forces in 2006, so his doesn’t come out much. My mother was an early style icon. She had amazing silver-laced shoes, which I would shove loo roll into so I could walk in them. I used to put on her nail polish and often smudged it all the way up my arms and legs. When I first started modelling, I bought a little MaxMara skirt at Harvey Nichols. I wore it until it nearly burst at the seams, which taught me how wonderfully tailored designer clothes are. I don’t really borrow people’s clothes because I’m such an odd size; not many of my friends are 6ft 2in with size 42 feet. I do have a lovely pair of Kate Moss’ Ray-Bans, which I haven’t given back yet. My real love is getting dirty with horses. I once did a really cool fashion shoot with Lee Jenkins for Vogue — I was the model they always knew they could stick on top of the horse and off I’d go. Gucci and Chanel are synonymous with riding, and I have some wonderful outfits by them, but they’re so precious, I daren’t ride in them. I’ve met the Queen a few times, which is always lovely, although usually very brief, with lots of bowing. I love Ladies’ Day at the Epsom Derby. Last year I went monochrome with a beautiful white Philip Treacy hat and a black dress by Suzannah. My MasterChef apron hangs on the back of the kitchen door. I look at it and think, ‘My God, runner-up. Did I really?’ John Torode is better dressed than Gregg Wallace — just. It might be fairer to say they’re equally bad. I’m never going back to the catwalks. I did Moschino’s 30th anniversary, and I’ll do other one-off things, but I’m never going to go back to being what someone else wants me to be.
