You beauty!

-

Now and again I open my bathroom cupboard, peer at the bunkermentality hoarding, spot an oldie-but-goodie and realise that — through some dereliction of duty — I have forgotten to tell you about it. So I apologise for this column, which should have been written some years ago. Much loved skincare products can be like mothers or old friends: we take them for granted until… we are stuck inside, going a little peculiar, knitting our own yoghurt and wondering what to do next.

But today I am looking at Clarins Tonic Body Treatment Oil with new eyes and reinvigorated appreciation. Suspended in a base of weightily rich, natural hazelnut oil (super-rich in vitamin E) is a detoxifying aromatherapeutic blend of essential oils unsullied by preservatives and synthetic fragrance. Rosemary is there to de-puff and turbo-charge circulation. Sage is included for its calming properties, mint is the life and soul of the party, bringing a refreshing zing to the proceedings, while geranium is there to heal and soothe. The carrier oil itself is deeply hydrating but also firming — a friend in times of weight loss, gain or general ennui to keep things supple and smooth. The whole package is one of vitality and faintly glamorous self-care. I find it both reassuring and grounding.

The fragrance is compelling and, for those who fall in love with it, Clarins does a Tonic range that includes a scrub, a shower gel and a balm. Clarins… a wonderfully formulated, reliable, heritage Parisian brand. I revisit it like a favourite novel and always find new things to love. Clarins Tonic Body Treatment Oil, £40 (clarins.co.uk)
