Kicking off this week with the BFI’s
Luminous fundraising gala and the inaugural Chanel Filmmaker Awards at The Londoner hotel for a stand-out night of star power with Eddie Redmayne and Dame Joan Collins. ‘I took no photos because I was too busy spending money at the auction,’ one of the guests told us — an auction, she reminded us, where all funds go to the British Film Institute and its mission to empower film-makers. BFI chief exec Ben Roberts took to the stage with Tilda Swinton to give out the awards and told the audience that when he and Sam Firth — one of the award winners — had been starting out in the industry, they used to sneak backstage together at events and steal vodka.
On to a dinner for Glenfiddich whisky next, celebrating its Time Re:Imagined collection in the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern, which saw new releases of 30, 40 and 50-year-old vintages. There we chewed the cud with Jack Guinness, who told us of the first time he’d ever had his picture in the Evening Standard. ‘I was standing next to Erin O’Connor. I was so excited to be next to a supermodel that you can clearly see I’m stood on my tip toes to try and be the same height as her but still failing…’ Cute.
