By jove, a neat routing of anti-Semitism
THE weekend saw a protest held by an extreme Right-wing group against what it calls the “Jewification” of Golders Green: specifically, the existence of a Jewish neighbourhood watch group called Shomrim.
In addition to minting the excellent term “Jewification” (what neighbourhood or, for that matter, cocktail party wouldn’t benefit from a bit of Jewification?) the neo-Nazis had big plans: a march through Golders Green, a little light Talmudburning, etc.
But first the police ensured they confined their protest to Whitehall, and then when they turned up they were greeted by a far larger counterdemonstration, which drowned them out with cheery cries of “Nazi scum — off our streets”.
An enduringly encouraging feature of London is that, when and where the Roderick Spodes —P G Wodehouse’s thinly veiled portrayal of Oswald Mosley — of each generation present themselves, they are pretty easily seen off.
