130 elephant tusks seized at Thai airport

THAI customs officials have seized 130 elephant tusks and ivory items hidden in crates being shipped from Africa to Asia.

Thai authoritie­s received a tip-off and began tracking the shipment when it left Addis Ababa airport in Ethiopia. On Friday, authoritie­s at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhu­mi airport stopped the shipment, which was hidden inside two wooden crates marked “marble pieces” that contained four suitcases with the ivory inside.

The ivory was worth an estimated 10 million Baht (£190,000). It is the 11th ivory seizure by Thai customs officers this year.
