Kyrgios will play despite Tomic row

NICK KYRGIOS confirmed he will play for Australia against Kazakhstan in the Davis Cup next week after rumours he would pull out because team-mate Bernard Tomic was dropped,

Tomic was punished for his attack on Tennis Australia bosses Craig Tiley and Steve Healy and former Cup captain Pat Rafter, now TA’s director of player performance.

That led to speculation the equally outspokken Kyrgios would consider a boycott in sympathy with his friend.

But he wrote on Facebook: “As a proud Australian it’s a privilege to be able to represent my country in Davis Cup. As long as I’m able, fit and healthy, it’s an opportunity I will never pass up.”

Meanwhile, former Wimbledon ladies’ champion Conchita Martinez will take over as Spain’s Davis Cup captain after Gala Leon Garcia was sacked last week.

Last year, Leon Garcia became Spain’s first female Davis Cup skipper but a change at the top of the Spanish federation resulted in her losing her job without overseeing a tie.
