Police seize new suspect over terror attacks in Barcelona

- Gerard Couzens

SPANISH police today arrested a man accused of collaborating with the terror gang behind last month’s deadly attacks in Barcelona and the nearby seaside resort of Cambrils.

The unnamed 24-year-old Moroccan was held by Civil Guard on suspicion of helping the terrorists acquire material for the bombs they were planning to use against targets including the Catalan capital’s famous Sagrada Familia basilica.

The gang had plotted a terrorist “spectacular” using vans packed with bombs made from butane-gas bottles and the explosive TATP. The plot was foiled when their bomb-making factory in Alcanar, 125 miles south west of Barcelona, exploded — killing the gang’s mastermind Abdelaki Es Satty and another member of the cell.

This morning’s arrest took place in the eastern coastal city of Vinaros on the Costa Azahar, a 20-minute drive south of Alcanar.

Spain’s Ministry of Interior said in a statement: “Several members of the cell had help from the detainee who facilitated his ID documents used to to buy hydrogen peroxide, a fundamental substance for the confection of the TATP explosive.”

NEW mother and UK human rights lawyer Amal Clooney attended the UN Security Council as it voted to investigate IS war crimes. She has been seeking justice for Yazidi sex slaves.
