EVICTING BOAT OWNERS WOULD BE MADNESS, SAYS SUGGS

- Kiran Randhawa

MADNESS singer Suggs has joined a group of Chelsea residents fighting the threat of eviction from their houseboats.

The residents at Chelsea Reach, which has been home to a number of celebrities, claim the owners of the site plan to replace them with super boats. Andrew and Charlotte Moffat, who own the Chelsea Yacht and Boat Company, served notices on 14 boat owners requiring them to dry-dock and be inspected on health and safety grounds. The company says four have done so, leaving 10 facing eviction. Suggs, above, said the evictions would be “absolute madness”, adding: “We are talking about real peoples’ lives.” The CYBC said there were no plans to replace the boats. It said a small group of owners had failed to dry-dock to ensure the safety of their vessels, adding they were putting the rest of the moorings at risk and, as a result, their licences had been terminated.
