Our other hero Harry: the muddy-kneed boy who never says die
THE headteacher of the school where England’s “other hero Harry” went has said she hopes he keeps showing his characteristic “never-saydie” attitude throughout the tournament.
Mary Emmett, 56, taught Harry Maguire — described by her as the “boy with constantly muddy trousers” — at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Primary School in the village of Spinkhill, south of Sheffield,
Defender Maguire travelled to France to support England at Euro 2016 as a fan, but was on the pitch against Tunisia on Monday, setting up Harry Kane’s stoppagetime winner.
She said: “I was so proud I could have cried when he walked out to play for England in the World Cup. It was incredible and crazy. When Harry popped up and headed it over to Harry Kane it was such a relief.
“He would never give up — he always keeps going until the last minute. He had the
evening against Belgium Kaliningrad.
The UK heatwave will culminate next Wednesday, which forecasters say could be the hottest day of the year so far.
The 30C peak will match highs in holiday hot spots in southern Spain. The average for this time of year is about 21C in London.
in same never-say-die attitude as a boy.”
Maguire, 25, still calls his former teacher “Mrs Emmett” despite her protestations. She said: “I really hope he continues to smile throughout the World Cup and enjoys playing football as much as he did when he was a lad. Our school motto is to ‘try to be the best you can in all you do’. That’s all we can ask of England too.”
As well as Maguire,
Mrs Emmett taught his brothers Joseph and Laurence, who have also made careers in football. She told the Standard: “I don’t know what they were feeding them.”
Maguire, who plays for Leicester City, returned to the school in 2016 to meet the children and answer their questions. Mrs Emmett said: “He told them you have to work hard at school, even if you have dreams of playing for England.”
The centre-half is in a long-term relationship with fellow Sheffield native Fern Hawkins. Before the World Cup, the physiotherapy graduate tweeted: “You make me so proud every single day.”
Meteorologist Mr Bowles added: “Monday 27C, Tuesday 28C, it’s quite likely, I’d say more likely than not, that somewhere in the UK on Wednesday will get 30C, probably the South-East of England.”
He pointed out that this is not certain as Wednesday is still far ahead in forecasting terms. If the temperature hits 30C it will be as hot as Gibraltar and parts of southern Spain, such as Marbella, which are also forecast to be around 30C.
Temperatures soared to 29.1C (84F) in St James’s Park in April.
