Welcome to your new television fixation. Showing in the UK on Sky Atlantic, Sharp Objects is the latest compelling drama from HBO, featuring some of the biggest talents in Hollywood.

F ive -t i me O s c a r-n o mi n e e A my Adams takes the lead in this chilling eight-part mini-series — a small-town murder-mystery that feels like the twisted love child of Twin Peaks and True Detective.

The story comes from the steel-trap mind of Gillian Flynn, the author of the runaway bestseller Gone Girl. Adapted from her 2006 debut novel, the scripts are co-written by Flynn with Marti Noxon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), one of the show’s creative forces alongside Get Out’s Jason Blum. But that’s not all. Calling the shots is JeanMarc Vallée, the director of HBO’s sensational Big Little Lies. Now do we have your attention?

Adams plays Camille Preaker, a reporter who returns to her Missouri hometown, Wind Gap, to investigate the murder of two young girls. Fragile and just back from her own stay in a psychiatric hospital, after hallucinations led to a stomach-churning self-harming incident, she begins to identify with the two victims as her own past comes under the microscope.

Along the way, she must reconnect with her difficult mother Adora (Patricia Clarkson) and her estranged teenage half-sister Amma (Eliza Scanlen).

Professional and personal lines are further blurred as she meets Richard Willis (The Newsroom’s Chris Messina), the detective heading up the murder case. It all melds into a gripping psychological thriller that marks Adams’ first foray into TV in more than a decade.

While none other than horror maestro Stephen King dubbed Flynn’s book “an admirably nasty piece of work”, Vallée’s adaptation is every bit as unsettling.

Destined to become this summer’s must-see, must-talk-about-the-nextmorning show, get ready for Sharp Objects. It will cut you to the bone.
