£2.8m boost for Duchess’s bid to send thousands more to school
THE Duchess of York expressed her delight today after revealing that her charity has raised £2.8 million to send thousands of children to school i n s o me o f t h e wo r l d ’s poorest counties.
The duchess, a patron of the London-based charity Street Child, said the Count Me In campaign had amassed £1.4 million from the public — which was doubled in matchfunding from the Government.
The appeal, supported by the Evening Standard, was launched in November. The charity wants to build thousands of new schools to give millions of vulnerable children access to education. As part of the campaign, the Evening Standard visited Sierra Leone with the duchess t h i s ye a r to see newly constructed schools and meet pupils.
The duchess said: “S t re e t C h i l d wi l l be able to help t h o u s a n d s mo re children go to school and learn.”
