McBryde: We won’t let Fiji burst our bubble

- Simon Collings

WALES must be on top of their game to ensure Fiji do not burst their Rugby World Cup bubble in Oita tomorrow.

That is according to forwards coach Robin McBryde, who is wary of the threat the Pacific Islanders pose.

Wales have made a perfect start, beating Australia and Georgia to make it two wins from as many games.

However, they know how destructive Fiji can be after being dumped out of the World Cup by them in 2007.

And McBryde (above) is determined to not let Fiji derail Wales’s bid this time, with a win enough to return them to the top of Pool D and secure qualification to the quarter-finals.

“We’ve created our own bubble at the World Cup,” McBryde said. “Historically, we always get stronger the more time we spend with each other. We’re in that bubble. The environment we’ve created allows individuals to improve their game but, collectively, it makes us stronger as a group as well. That will get us through against Fiji.”

Wales come into this match off the back of an extended break, with their last game against Australia having taken place on September 29. It means they have a tight turnaround to finish the pool stages as after tomorrow’s game they face Uruguay on Sunday and, given the fact Typhoon Hagibis is due to hit Japan this weekend, there is no room for complacency in case matches become disrupted.

“They will be big tests. We will have to be at our best and take it one day at a time,” McBryde added.

“We’ve obviously had a 10-day break and we’ve been able to get recharged.”
