WHAT TO LISTEN TO...

- Jochan Embley

Lorde

Stoned at the Nail Salon (Universal) There’s a new track by Lorde, inset, and it’s a change of pace. If the lead single was a summery breeze about being “kinda like a prettier Jesus”, then this gently regretful second offering is a rather more autumnal chill — even if the seemingly profound realisations in the lyrics might just be the result of smoking too much weed.

Childish Gambino

Stay High (Sony)

Michael Kiwanuka, Laura Mvula, BADBADNOTGOOD and Syd are among the artists brought together by Jaime Reimagined, a rework of Brittany Howard’s solo debut from 2019. The biggest track, Stay High, has been given the Donald Glover treatment here, swapping those folky guitars for some falsetto-laden analogue soul.

Owen

Me (Polyvinyl)

In between fronting the legendary emo band American Football, Mike Kinsella releases music via his similarly excellent solo project Owen. His latest output is this cover, in which he’s taken a really sad song — Me by the 1975 — and made it even sadder. We’re not complaining though; it’s an emotionally crisp, sensitively arranged tear-jerker.

The Linda Lindas (Epitaph)

Oh!

This quartet, whose ages range from 10 to 16, took a personal experience of discrimination at school and turned it into punk-rock rage with their song Racist, Sexist Boy. A live performance of the track in the LA Public Library went viral, and now the band have signed to famed label Epitaph. This angsty follow-up proves they’re not a one-hit wonder.
