Shooting triggers glorious weekend at the Games... here are the highlights to look out for
TOMORROW
Shooting: Women’s 10m air rifle final (2.45am)
The first gold of these Games is expected to be awarded early tomorrow morning. Britain’s Seonaid McIntosh is an outside contender for a medal, though her best chance will come in the 50m event, where she is world champion.
Cycling: Men’s road race (3am) Slovenia’s dominant Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar is looking to add Olympic gold to the yellow jersey but faces stiff competition from compatriot Primoz Roglic and Belgium’s Wout van Aert. The British challenge is led by former Tour winner Geraint Thomas, who is already a double Olympic champion on the track.
Tennis: Men’s and women’s singles (3am)
The tennis tournament gets under way and across the course of the weekend players such as Naomi Osaka, Ash Barty, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are all in action. Liam Broady joins Murray in the men’s singles, with Heather Watson representing Team GB on the women’s side.
Women’s Football: Japan v Great Britain (11.30am)
After beating Chile, Hege Riise’s side can book their place in the knockout stage. Japan are familiar opponents, having lost 2-0 to England and defeated Scotland 2-1 at the 2019 Word Cup.
SUNDAY
Swimming: Men’s 400m individual medley final (2.30am)
The first gold medal up for grabs in the pool could bring home glory as Japan’s three-time world champion in the event Daiya Seto aims to improve on his bronze from Rio. GB’s Max Litchfield will hope to be in the final, too.
Skateboarding: Men’s street final (4.25am)
Perhaps the most intriguing of the new sports makes its Olympic debut at the Ariake Sports Park. Nyjah Huston, a four-time world champion, is one of the most successful boarders in history but Japan’s Yuto Horigome will be hoping to deliver home gold after beating the American to the world title last month.
Cycling: Women’s road race (5am) Britain’s Lizzie Deignan finished fifth in Rio after silver in London but will have her work cut out against a mighty Dutch team that includes the 2012 and 2016 gold medallists in Marianne Vos
and Anna van der Breggen, as well as Annemiek van Vleuten, who was leading in Rio before a horrific crash.
Taekwondo: Women’s -57kg and men’s -68kg finals (1.30pm)
Jade Jones seeks a third title, but teammate Bradly Sinden also has a huge medal chance on his Olympic bow. The 22-year-old is Britain’s first ever male world champion. Could Team GB win two medals in a matter of minutes?
Men’s triathlon: (10.30pm)
With two-time champion Alistair Brownlee failing to qualify, brother Jonny will be hoping to complete his set after winning bronze in London and silver in Rio but debutant Alex Yee may have just as good a shot at gold. Spain’s Mario Mola and Frenchman Vincent Luis are leading contenders.
MONDAY
Swimming: Men’s 100m breaststroke final (3.12am)
If Britain have not won their first gold medal by the time Adam Peaty dives into the pool in the early hours of Monday morning, then they almost certainly will less than a minute later. The defending champion boasts the 18 fastest times in history and may have his own world record in his sights.
