Five Ukrainian railway stations ‘hit by missile strikes within an hour’

FIVE railway stations in Ukraine were reportedly hit by missile strikes within an hour today.

Officials accused Vladimir Putin’s army of “systematically destroying” the infrastructure which thousands of people are using in attempts to flee fighting.

A substation in Krasne, near Lviv in Western Ukraine, was hit. Video posted online shows firefighters battling the flames at the facility.

Oleksandr Kamyshin, the chief executive of the state-owned Ukrainian Railways, said: “This morning, within an hour, five railway stations in central and western Ukraine came under fire.”

He added that at least 16 passenger trains would be delayed and some people had been hurt. Officials were still seeking details on the number of injured.

It came hours after Russia was hit by a major fire following huge explosions at an oil storage depot close to the Ukraine border.

The oil storage depot in Bryansk city, around 100 miles from the Ukrainian border, is likely to be vital for supplying Russia’s troops in their surge to take control of the Donbas.

There was no immediate indication that the fire was related to the war in Ukraine, although Russian officials said last week that Ukrainian helicopters hit residential buildings and injured seven people in the area.

A second unconfirmed blaze was reported at a military base in the area where a military unit of the 120th arsenal of the Main Rocket and Artillery Directorate is located.

The giant fire at the Druzhba oil depot in Bryansk could be seen from the entire city.

Russian shelling has been continuing in the east of Ukraine with civilian deaths reported in both Kharkiv and Donetsk.

The governor of the eastern Luhansk region Serhiy Haidai said the area saw heavy bombardment yesterday, when those in the region were celebrating Orthodox Easter. He said three high-rise buildings and four houses were destroyed in the strikes.

Meanwhile a newly released video is said to show Ukrainian children receiving Easter presents inside the Azovstal steelworks in the besieged southern city of Mariupol.
