Laureus win makes Jude hungrier in treble bid

- Matt Majendie

JUDE BELLINGHAM has set his sights on a remarkable treble for Real Madrid and England.

Madrid are all but guaranteed La Liga, with an 11-point advantage over Barcelona after Bellingham’s injury-time winner on Sunday night, and with just six league games remaining.

They face Bayern Munich next Tuesday in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final, while England are in contention to win Euro 2024.

After winning the Laureus breakthrough of the year award in Madrid last night, Bellingham (above) said: “It’s been a bit of a crazy week, a mad few days. I’m really proud to win this, but I hope to make some more memories with Real Madrid and England. Success would be winning all three: La Liga, the Champions League with Real Madrid and the Euros with England.

“We’ve still got a few more games to wrap up La Liga and then two difficult games against Bayern Munich. For the Euros, hopefully we can take our form from the last few tournaments into that and go one better.”

Football dominated the awards, with Aitana Bonmati named Laureus sportswoman of the year and her Spain team-mates winning the team award after their World Cup triumph last year.

Novak Djokovic won a fifth sportsman of the year award, following an epic season in which he won three grand slams and came close to sealing the clean sweep in a thrilling Wimbledon final against Carlos Alcaraz. He also won the ATP Tour Finals and remains No1 at the start of the clay-court season.

The 24-time grand slam champion said: “I’m incredibly honoured to have won my fifth Laureus world sportsman of the year award. I think back to 2012, when I won it for the first time as a 24-year-old. I am very proud to be here 12 years later, reflecting on a year that brought me and my fans a lot of excitement and success.

“It was thrilling to return to Australia last January and win my 10th title. It is a tournament that is so dear to my heart and set me up for an incredible 12 months. I could not have achieved so much success without an incredible team behind me.”
