Woman tells of running for life from flying sign

- By Will Lyon

A Dundee woman today told how she ran for her life after being chased by a 20ft sheet of metal brought down by 70mph winds.

Paula Barclay, 22, was heading to work when she saw a huge sign lying on top of a pal’s car at the Kingsway East Retail Park.

The board that had sat above the entrance of the former Comet store had come crashing down on the yellow Peugeot, smashing the front and passenger-side window.

Paula, of Fintry, went running into a nearby shop to alert her friend and the emergency services were called to help deal with the incident. Paula had just taken a picture of what had happened when the sign was suddenly lifted by a gust of wind and it started flying towards her at high speed.

Luckily, she managed to hide in a nearby shop until the emergency services arrived.

Recalling the incident on Sunday morning, Paula said: “I was driving into work when I saw it lying on my friend’s car.

“I went into the shop to tell my friend and I had gone back outside to take photos of the car for the insurance when it came flying at me.

“I had just taken one photo when the wind lifted the sign above the door right off and it came straight for me.

‘Police officer just jumped on top of it’

“I didn’t think about it — I just ran away as quickly as I could.

“Within minutes the police had arrived and an officer just jumped on top of it. It could have ended up in the Asda car park, causing a lot of damage if it wasn’t for them getting there so quickly. “In the end, no one got hurt, thankfully. “Unfortunately, my friend’s car had its front window screen smashed and the passenger window was shattered.”

Police attended the incident just after 10am on Sunday and confirmed that no one was injured in the incident.
