Place name puzzle at Dundee bus stop

- By Connor McCann

The new sign bearing the name of the building was a cause of surprise among commuters, as the Dundee high rise was demolished over a year ago. It has now sparked a debate on a more suitable name for the stop.

George Aimer, of Kinghorne Road, who noticed the mistake, said: “A new bus stop was put up on Strathmartine Road for routes 1b and 22 — it clearly states you are at Butterburn Court.

“Considering the building was demolished you would think the powers-that-be would have put Hill Street on the stop, as it’s only yards away.”

The multi was one of two demolished in 2013 after it was decided the 27-storey block was seen as an eyesore on the c i t y ’s skyline.

Mandy Hannan, 50, a florist working at Flowers at Dawn, across from the bus stop, said: “I’m not too sure why they have called it Butterburn Court when the bus stop is right outside Butterburn Square.

“I lived in the court for six years and the square for 20 and I think it would make more sense to have the stop named Butterburn Square because it’s still there.

“The multis were knocked down quite a while ago — I don’t know if it’s a genuine mistake or a nostalgic thing they have done.

“But that area across the road has always been known as Butterburn Square.”

Built in 1973, the tower blocks were seen as part of the solution to the UK’s social housing problem after the Second World War.

They were then demolished on June 30 last year.

Another Dundee commuter said: “It’s a wee bit behind the times, but maybe they wanted to call the stop that in memory of the multis — Bucklemaker Court and Butterburn Court.

“To be honest I’m not too fussed what the bus stop is called — as long as it’s being used and people are happy with the service.

“If it is a mistake or not, it’s really up to the people in charge what they call the stops.”

A spokesman for Dundee City Council said: “We are aware of this and will be rectifying the sign in due course.” cmccann@
