Skipper Gil sc and his dad

DESPITE playing in all grades of football from primary football to senior, I was never in a Scottish Cup-winning side.

The nearest I had to that season grand finale was a couple of quarter-final slots.

I often wondered what it would be like to win a Scottish Cup.

Now I’ve stumbled into a story of a player who won a Scottish Cup — a feat achieved with several brilliant add-ons.

Wearing the No 9 shirt for his team, he scored in every round of the competition, including the final, which went to three games. Not only that, he was captain of the team. And not only that, his dad presented the trophy to him.

The year was 1967 and Maryfield United made it through to the two-legged Scottish U/27 Juvenile Cup Final against Germiston Star.

After a 1-1 away draw, the teams drew 2-2 in the second leg at North End Park, Dundee.

Maryfield skipper Gil Kerr takes up the story.

“There was such a large crowd at North End Park for the second leg, we didn’t need to toss the coin for ground advantage in the play-off,” recalled Gil, who was the aforementioned ace No 9 who scored in all the rounds.

“Germiston were delighted with the crowd and agreed to come back for the third game.

“Mind you, they thought they had won the cup during the second leg because, at 2-2, they scored but it was chalked off as one of their players was in an offside position.

“He wasn’t really interfering with play — as is today’s interpretation — so we got away with a bit of luck there.

“The first half of the third game was close and we went in at the interval at 0-0.

“But they couldn’t live with us in t half and we hammered in seven go 7-0 through doubles from mysel McDonald and Jim McNicoll, and from Jimmy Stewart.”

Gil’s dad is Jerry Kerr, the l Dundee United manager.

He continued: “Dad was there at t leg at the request of the association just because I was playing.

“He came back to the third g presented the trophy to me. “Just a coincidence but good all th Maryfield, at that time, didn
