Dozens of streets set for closure as 20 weeks of work arrives in Hilltown

- BY CONNOR MCCANN

Stretches of more than 30 roads in the Hilltown area — including parts of Strathmartine Road, Hilltown, and Constitution Street — will be shut for periods from Monday.

In addition, several roads in the Graham Street area will shut at times for the next six weeks as part of the programme.

The closures are to allow for Scottish Water to carry out mains renewal works.

The utilities firm has warned that more than one street may be closed at any given time.

A spokesman for the company said the works were part of a £5 million investment in the city.

He said: “The project involves the lining of water mains with some sections of open cut mains replacement and as a result will involve planned interruptions to the water supply and extensive roadworks, including road and lane closures where required. Any customers affected by disruption to their water supply, or works in their streets, will receive advance notice.

“The next stage of these essential works will be done on a rolling programme, as has been the case in the previous work in the Perth Road, Lochee Road, and Blackness Road areas of the city, so only a small number of roads listed will be affected at the same time.

“Overall, the remainder of the programme of work in Dundee is expected to take approximately 10 months.

“Scottish Water is liaising with Dundee City Council’s roads department throughout these works and will continue to do so to minimise disruption. Scottish Water thanks customers for their patience during these works.”

Locals have concerns about parking in the area, loading and traffic congestion.

Beth Keay, the office manager at Rough and Fraser’s bakery on Kinghorne Road, said: “The bakery could see a fall in the number of customers we get — but that all depends on how long we lose the use of the parking bay we have outside the shop. We would hope the number of people who walk to the bakery remains to the same though.

“There is another Rough and Fraser bakery nearby in Provost Road so our customers will be able to go there instead.

“At the moment, we have not received any notification when the works will take place.

“Another concern for us would be whether Scottish Water is required to turn off the water supply.

“We bake inhouse and having no water would have an affect on how much dough we can prepare.

“But if it is to improve the water mains, then the work is necessary.”

David Anderson, the owner of Hilltown Motors at the junction of Dons Road and Constitution Street, said: “It’s something people living and working in the area will have to live with until the works are complete.

“The biggest issue that concerns me about these roadworks is the number cars parking in the area.

“People park their cars in the area and then walk to the town throughout the week because they don’t have to pay. Because the roads they usually park on will be closed for a time,

DOZENS of Dundee streets will face closure in the coming weeks due to a programme of roadworks set to last until February.

that may mean more cars will park around the garage.

“There’s already a problem with the number of cars parking in the area. There will be difficult times ahead.”

Erin Hughes, a stylist at Shades Hair and Beauty Salon, added: “The works will probably bring a lot of traffic build-up in the area. That will be OK for our clients who live within walking distance to the salon.

“But it might stop people from outwith the area coming to the shop.

“The Hilltown is not as busy as it used to be, so there is a chance business will be affected.”
