Charity cycle raises £4k

-

THE second Tour de Tay charity cycle has raised more than £4,000 to help student scholarships at Abertay University.

Last weekend’s event was supported by more than 150 cyclists who completed the 50-mile route from the Tay Road Bridge to Perth and back.

Staff, students, graduates and friends of the university were involved, with £4,150 raised via the Just Giving page. They had set a target of £3,000.

The sporting event is in aid of Abertay’s Expanding Horizons Fund, which helps finance scholarships for students to work and study abroad.

The cyclists travelled through Newburgh in Fife, then back through Errol and Dundee along the north bank of the Tay.

There were teams from Abertay schools and services, NCR, Thorntons Solicitors, Thorntons Investments and Burnside Motors.

Some unusual bikes took to the road on the day such as husband and wife team Pauline and Stuart McCormack on a tandem.

Carol Ann Smith, head of alumni and development, said: “We are delighted that so many people turned up to cycle and are helping to raise money.

“It’s all in aid of supporting our students to reach their full potential and provide transformational opportunities that without financial help would not be possible. Thank you to everyone who has participated and all the volunteers and marshals who have helped make it a safe and fun event.”
