Cinema club for OAPs
After winning the Elderly category at the Evening Telegraph’s Community Spirit Awards last time around, Mary Cavin has continued her work to help older people in Dundee.
Now, the secretary of Nae Limits 60+ Association has set up a cinema club which aims to integrate older people in care with the general elderly public.
Mary said: “The Golden Oldies Cinema Club was set up to give elderly folk an experience of their childhood when they would go to the cinema back in the day.
“We came up with the idea a few months ago now and have shown a few movies already at the Ardler Community Centre.
“It’s £4 entry and for that you get a choc ice during the showing and your lunch at the interval.
“The folk who attend get a lot for popularity and Mary wants to expand the club to the elderly throughout the city. It was great to be recognised for the award — what a brilliant night it was. But this isn’t a sign for me or the Nae Limits team to slow down.
“We want to expand the service and get the elderly in the east and west of the city involved. Another idea we want to take forward is a cinema club for people living in veteran’s homes — particularly the men.
“Men over 60 are more prone to feelings of loneliness and for whatever reason it can be difficult for them to remain social when they get to that age.
“So we are planning to show classic movies, which will bring back a lot of good memories they can hopefully start talking about.
“There’s a lot of work still to be done and I’m not stopping any time soon.”
