Man’s anger over incident on west end of the Kingsway

- BY ADAM HILL

Robert Sheridan, 54, was driving his lorry on the western end of the city’s Kingsway when a van suddenly began to brake in front of him.

The van then moved into the middle of the road in an apparent effort to force his l orry i nto the central reservation.

Robert captured the shocking encounter on his dash cam.

He told the Tele today the van driver “could have caused a serious accident” and that he had released the footage in the hope of promoting road safety.

He said: “There was no need for what he did. He pulled out in front of me twice and when I went to overtake him, he did it again — there was no reason for what he was doing.

“I am happy to give people the benefit of the doubt on the road but he had bad intentions — you can see that he tried to force me into the central reservation.

“If I had been driving a bus it might have toppled over and killed someone.”

Robert, from Wishaw, said he believes people should be educated in how to drive when sharing the road with heavy goods vehicles.

He added: “I think that it comes down to education. It’s about people knowing the consequences of what can happen in these situations.

“There are too many stories of people’s lives being changed or lost due to poor driving on the road.

“I think that when you are a professional driver you see a lot more of the reality of what can happen on the roads — I have had a few very close shaves.” Mike Bristow, spokesman for the road safety charity Brake, said that the incident was “deeply concerning”. He added: “It shows the type of reckless driving that can, and regularly does, lead to collisions and deaths on the road. Dangerous overtaking is a serious issue on roads in the UK but thanks to technology we can now have permanent evidence. “Too many drivers seem to believe that their journey is more important than the safety of other road users. Technology such as dash cams can play a crucial role in both protecting road users and bringing those who break the law to justice.”
