Swifts are sunk by Sam’s late double

-

CARNOUSTIE produced another thrilling finish to knock Jeanfield out of the GA Cup.

Scott Sutherland gave Swifts the lead in seven minutes but the Gowfers hit back through Sam Simpson in 52 minutes. Sutherland then seemed to clinch the tie for the Perth side when he scored his second of the game with 15 minutes to go.

However, the Gowfers refused to give in and a double from Simpson in injury time to complete his hat-trick completed another terrific finish for Alan McSkimming’s side.

In the same competition, both Downfield and Forfar WE fired blanks as their tie ended goalless, with the Strathmore Park side holding their nerve to win a penalty shoot-out 4-3. Forfar goalie Daryl Burns saved three spot-kicks. A controversial refereeing decision denied Tayport a share of the points at Kennoway in the Premier League.

The Canniepairt side took the lead in 15 minutes through Dale Reid. However, the home side came back strongly to lead 3-1 at the interval.

Reid, with his second of the match, pulled one back in 53 minutes and, with only a few minutes remaining, it looked like ’Port had made it three apiece when a long throw from John Ovenstone was bundled over the line by Jamie Mackie. However, their joy was short lived after the referee ruled it out for a hand ball.

The decision infuriated all in Tayport colours, especially Mackie, who was red carded for dissent.

Violet got themselves off the bottom of the league with a 2-1 win at Armadale. The Glenesk outfit went in at the break two ahead thanks to strikes from Ryan Dignan and Gavin Hood. Although Armadale pulled one back in the second half, the Pansies stood firm and picked up three precious points.
